Gleaner (student newspaper)

The Gleaner is the student-run newspaper of Rutgers–Camden. Today, it is published primarily in digital format, with several issues per year released as a glossy magazine. Check out the Gleaner website for the latest news.

The Paul Robeson Library holds a near-complete run of the Gleaner since its inception in the 1950s. The library is now working to digitize full issues of the newspaper from the early decades and anticipates that this resource will become available to researchers in the coming years.

Graduate students Megan Heeb and Joe Sánchez worked to digitize over 100 articles from the Gleaner issues published between 1987 and 1990. These articles provide a snapshot of student life in that era, covering topics such as the AIDS epidemic, dating, beauty standards, women's rights, gay community on campus, pop culture, and humor.

The students created two projects analyzing journalism in the Gleaner. Talking Politics in the Gleaner by Megan Heeb explores how Rutgers–Camden students engaged in political discourse in the newspaper and highlights heated debates on topics such as homosexuality, racism, and reproductive rights. Joe Sánchez created "The Rutgers Bitch" in the Gleaner, a digital zine that explores the irreverent, unapologetic voice of Flo Werner, a student journalist who provided hilarious and biting social commentary in her regular column called "The Rutgers Bitch" in the Gleaner.
