About This Project

This digital history project is a part of digitalcamden.org.

My name is Kieran Leo Armstrong, and when I first learned about the Bancroft Collection, I was immediately drawn to it. I have a passion for disability history, one that I've been fostering since my undergraduate years, and was shocked to find out that the first special education school was right next door and I hadn't even known it. I wanted to learn more.

As I investigated, I found that the collection held much more than just disability history. Talking to Bart Everts helped me make the connection between the Childhood Studies PhD program here and the materials in the Bancroft Collection. When I was tasked with creating a project about some of the material in Rutgers Camden's Special Collections, I knew I wanted to tell others about the collection to show off how fascinating and useful these materials could be.

The collection is such a valuable resource. I hope you enjoy investigating it as much as I did.

One of the photos of the Bancroft School that immediately caught my eye. This photo and more can be found in the extensive collection of historic photographs.
