Morality of Homosexuality?

Columnist & Lesbian Student

Mark C. Still, a regular columnist for The Gleaner, questions the purpose of making education curriculums more inclusive by adding information about homosexuality in subjects like history and biology.

In a Letter to the Editor, Tami L. Grovatt responds to and strongly denounces Still's views on homosexuality and queer activism.

This is an outrage. Where does it end? On the political tier gays and lesbians are nothing more than a special interest group, lobbying for their cause at the expense of others.

Please tell me what it is you will lose if all people are recognized and treated equally. Is your heterosexuality so unsteady that its maintenance depends upon the suppression of others?

[M]orality is not a word I use lightly. But surely common morality has a place in this society.

You refer to "common morality" without defining it. Does that morality involve love?

What does the Homosexual lobby/community hope to accomplish for society, and themselves, by trying to mainstream society into their lifestyles? They are a narrow segment of the community which has made its own choices, and should be treated as such.

If you had researched homosexuality or interviewed any lesbian woman or gay man, you would have been informed that it is not an issue of choice... I cannot choose what has been a part of me from the start.

In a later column, Still apologizes for his bigotry and rescinds his homophobic viewpoints.

Many of you who read these words today know that I once wrote an unadvised essay on the "morality" of homosexuality. Let me lay that to rest; what I said then I now unconditionally disavow.

There is no divine edict that pronounces how, why and with whom we are supposed to love.
