Campus Life & Culture

Alongside political organizing, Black students at Rutgers-Camden cultivated a vibrant cultural and intellectual community. With student publications, public events, and artistic expression, they created spaces that fostered collective belonging. Newsletters such as Black Observer and Khuluma served as platforms for political thought, community updates, and cultural reflection. These publications demonstrate the intellectual engagement beyond the classroom, where students generated ways to engage with both local and global experiences.

Events that centered Black culture included festivals as well as lectures and performances by prominent figures such as Angela Davis and Nikki Giovanni, as well as Patti Labelle and Giraldo Rivera. These events added to the vibrancy of student life and offered students intellectual spaces beyond the classroom. These gatherings celebrated Black culture, connecting Rutgers-Camden students to broader networks of activism and artistic production. These materials highlight relevant campus events, which intertwined political activism with building community.
